Lindsey Dirksen — “Just Before the Birds”

The blade is dull, slicing through curling
black toe hairs, a step sister’s wail
slipping pain like whispers in the air—
It’ll fit. I’ll make it fit.

The tip of the big nail goes first, scarlet
bloody valentines dripping from her foot
puddling on plush richy rugs, smeared
sludge red like Rorschcach blots on the cool

glass shoe. Then the pinkie toe- narrow
footed scabby and her gasp, slick
inhale held under her corset tight
ties like her grip on the knife.
He’ll want me. He’ll love me.
